Almost everything you need for a week here can be delivered to the house before you land. The trick is knowing which items sell out and which you can sort on the Monday.
A golf cart is the one to book early. The island runs on them, the supply is genuinely finite, and on a good July week the rental fleet is spoken for well in advance. South Carolina also regulates permitted carts: where they can legally be driven, how far from the registered address, and the hours. Read the rental agreement rather than assuming, because the rules are stricter than most visitors expect.
Beach gear is the opposite. Chairs, umbrellas, wagons, coolers, cribs and boards are widely available and most companies will drop them at the house before you arrive and collect them after you leave. Nobody should spend the first morning of a holiday buying a cooler they will abandon on Saturday.
Bikes are worth it if you are staying on the Litchfield side, where the paved path runs a long way and the neighbourhoods are flat and quiet. On the island itself, distances are short enough that a cart or your feet usually cover it.
Boats split into two kinds. A pontoon is the family choice for the creek and the inlet on a rising tide. A skiff gets you onto the flats where the fish are, but it wants somebody aboard who can read water. If nobody in the party can, a guided trip is better value than a rental and a bad afternoon.
Book the cart first
It is the item most likely to be unavailable, and the one that most changes how a week feels.
Match the boat to the tide
The creek drains hard. A pontoon on a falling tide is how people end up sitting on mud for three hours.
Ask about delivery
Most gear companies deliver and collect. It costs little and saves a car load.
Check what the house already has
Plenty of rentals include chairs, umbrellas and bikes. Ask before you rent a second set.

Questions we get
About rentals in Pawleys Island
Straight answers, and we say when something is our opinion.
Do I need a golf cart on Pawleys Island?
You do not need one, but most people who stay a week end up with one. Carts are the normal way to move between a rental house, the beach access and the creek. South Carolina limits where a permitted cart may legally be driven and how far it may travel from its registered address, so read the rental terms before you plan on driving it to dinner.
How far ahead should I book a golf cart?
Earlier than you think, particularly for the summer weeks and the good fall stretches. Carts are the first rental category to sell out here because the fleet is small and demand spikes on the same weeks every year.
Can beach gear be delivered to my rental house?
Usually, yes. Most gear companies on the Waccamaw Neck deliver before arrival and collect after departure, which is why almost nobody bothers hauling chairs and umbrellas down from home.
Is a boat rental a good idea if I have never driven one?
For the creek on a rising tide with a pontoon, often yes. For the flats or the inlet, a guided trip is the better call. The water here changes character quickly with the tide, and local knowledge is worth more than horsepower.
